Uninstalling GNOME

Postby Muhnamana on Sun Nov 22, 2009 12:19 am

Ok so I had a laptop that had Windows XP on it. I deleted all partitions and installed GNOME. So everything installed fine but there are drivers I need to install like the wireless network card drivers but can't install them saying unable to mount the drive.

1. How can I install these the drivers I need for the wireless network card?
1a. If they can't be installed, how can I uninstall GNOME? I tried booting from the reinstallation disc for Windows XP but it hangs up doing nothing.

Being a Windows user, I wanted to experiment with something new and seems as though I completely F'ed up my system.

Any help would be appreciated!

If you want to uninstall gnome or better dropline GNOME then you need to do that with the dropline-installer.

From what I understand you want to reinstall windows correct ? To do that should be enough to install it with the installation CD.

If you want the drivers for your wifi to be installed you need to get them from the correct place and install them in slackware, this has nothing to do with dropline GNOME.

Any questions you may have, dont hesitate to ask.

Yeah I installed GNOME from their website, not from dropline as you refer to.

1. Where might I find the dropline installer?

2. Yeah I need to uninstall GNOME first before reinstalling Windows XP. Booting from the reinstall disc is hanging up and not installing, which is why I thought I would uninstall.

3. I'd love to find the wifi drivers and continue to use GNOME. Where on slackware might I find this? Should I just download Slackware 13.0 and within that I'll find the wifi drivers?

Muhnamana,

I suspect that you installed an distribution which also supports Gnome (one of the list here http://www.gnome.org/~davyd/footware.shtml perhaps?)

Depending what your gool is:
- Continue with Linux and GNOME > find the correct forum matching your distribution to get futher with the issue you have.
- Install XP again > fix the issue you see when trying to install XP again.

If it is the second one you might have a problem with the master boot record (mbr) which causes XP installation to fail.
If this is the case try to startup from the XP cd and look for a repair option (e.g. press R now for repair... or so), next select the repair via command prompt option.
If you managed to get a command prompt execute the following command: 'fdisk /mbr" (without the quotes)
(For Vista the commands are: "bootrec.exe /FixBoot" and "bootrec.exe /FixMBR")
Google for: xp fdisk mbr
to get more info.

I hope you go for the first option, and getting you driver issue solved (maybe taking the second option to get there).

First question is, what kind of distribution you use ?

Second one is how you installed gnome ?
