Dropline GNOME 2.18.3 BETA for Slackware 12.0

Postby zborgerd on Sat Jul 21, 2007 6:30 pm

That's right. We'll be publicly posting the installer for Slackware 12.0 tomorrow.

The Slackware 12.0 platform has a number of updates and features that make it a superb platform for GNOME 2.18.

We are almost finished rebuilding things and testing on Slackware 12.0. It's currently quite stable, and there are just a handful of bugs to work out. As it stands, this is going to be the smallest release we've produced so far, with a mere *8* packages that replace Slackware originals. We've also managed (so far) to make the overall package total drop by 23 packages compared to the 2.16 release.

I hope you all are as excited as we are! :D

Sounds great! Thanks for all the time and effort you spend.

I can hardly wait to install Slackware 12 and the new Dropline Gnome :)

-hanky-

P.S.: Is there a possibility to see which packages will be replaced?

As of right now, here's the list:

shadow-4.0.18.1-i686-4dl.tgz replaces slackware pack.
libidl-0.8.8-i686-2dl.tgz replaces slackware pack.
gnome-icon-theme-2.18.0-noarch-4dl.tgz replaces slackware pack.
vte-0.16.6-i686-2dl.tgz replaces slackware pack.
librsvg-2.16.1-i686-4dl.tgz replaces slackware pack.
mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.5-i686-2dl.tgz replaces slackware pack.
mozilla-thunderbird-2.0.0.4-i686-2dl.tgz replaces slackware pack.
openldap-client-2.3.36-i686-1dl.tgz replaces slackware pack.

There are two other packages that we really need to replace (there are some critical bugs in Slackware's LibX11 and GTK packs) but we're going to see if we can pass it onto Pat to offer patched versions first.

Here it is!

http://osdn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcefo ... 86-3dl.tgz

Just a note. Only clean installs of Slackware 12.0 are supported. Older versions of Dropline GNOME contained a different package list and the installer is not going to account for those old packages since we don't support upgrades between major Slackware releases.

If you are one of those people that insists on using broken old installs of Slackware that you've updated for the last 10 years, then you will want to get the checkStuff.sh script to check for old packages that are no longer included:

http://zborgerd.droplinegnome.org/scripts/checkStuff.sh

chmod +x checkStuff.sh
./checkStuff.sh --stale

Just a few notes:

1. System-tools-backends are still broken.

2. A handful of packages still need to be rebuilt and are relying on a glitz dependency (which was removed). These include GomeBaker, Abiword, Gnumeric, Bluefish, and Ekiga.

3. Slackware has buggy versions of LibX11 and GTK+2 (which we no longer include). You may find that Metacity minimizing is slow unless you update LibX11 to 1.1.2. GTK has a few crash and printing problems from what I understand. We're working on talking with Pat to see if he is interested in providing official Slackware patches so we don't have to replace these.

4. There is currently a login.defs Shadow bug. If you don't want to deal with it, you may want to wait a day or two until it's fixed. It's pretty harmless, but will spit out errors like "configuration error - unknown item 'DIALUP_CHECK_ENAB' (notify administrator)". If you encounter this early during installation (shadow is the third package), just restart the installer and start over again. it will use the cached files so you won't have download them a second time. You may want to copy /etc/login.defs.new to /etc/login.defs.

Yeah. It should be there for some time. We might just keep it that way so that 11.0 users can still install the old 2.18 beta, which is indexed in the DroplineFiles2.18 (without the b) file.

Note that there are a few Slackware packages listed at the bottom. Those were put there just to make sure all of the alpha testers got the right packages restored. The "testing" packs at the bottom will also have proper descriptions by the time we finalize this release, and the index will be reworked so that uninstallation of 2.18.3 will be really easy from now on.

After the installation, I cannot find nm-applet. This is not included yet?

Reading from Zborgerd note:

I suggest follow the instruction given by Zborgerd and see if this fix the problem.

Good luck!

Thanks len. I was sure that I've read that somewhere. I guess I'll be running the dropline-installer one more time.

Great job to the devs!

No. You should only do this if the installation fails and spits out this message while installing 2.18.3. If you get this error *in the installer*, then just re-run the dropline-installer and continue with "upgrade".

You will also get these messages when you run "su" and login until we upload a new package. We should have a package update soon. It's a harmless error.

I don't know exactly what's the status on the Ati linux drivers, but as far as I can remember my previous linux box which had a Radeon 9500 non-Pro was especially sucky in 2D; 3D acceleration was ok. I remember playing UT2004 on it, and it was decent. I would think the 3D desktop should work ok... Am I wrong?

As the glitz appears to be dependancy of gdm and X, and is not provided by dropline nor Slackware, can you provide us with a dlg pack or we should use external ones ?

So I upgraded from Slackware 11 to Slackware 12, installed the new DLG version, fixed the problem with the Intel integrated graphics card driver on my laptop, and things seem to be running ok for the most part.

Some comments I would like to make:
- I am really happy with gnome-screensaver, it looks so much better;
- I fixed the problem with the stb-admin group as indicated by saxa here;
- I am happy Slackware 12 upgraded glibc to 2.5, I can now use Skype 1.4 instead of the hideous 1.3 :P ;
- although I did replace /etc/login.defs with /etc/login.defs.new, I still get messages like "configuration error - unknown item 'DIALUP_CHECK_ENAB' (notify administrator)" when I login in runlevel 3 (and I get like 15 of them once, just after typing my username, and before the "Password:" prompt). I looked through the new login.defs file, and the items that are listed as "unknown" are there... On the bright side though, I no longer get these messages when I "sudo su -".

Overall, great job, I'm very happy! :)
Thank you.

It shouldn't be anymore. In my test system, gdm is not link with glitz. Did you do a full install?

As I don't have access to the system right now, I'll come to that matter tonight. But may be I still use the old gdm package, at least that is the only logical explanation. May be the upgrade process needs some tunning :)) I know you don't support upgrade but only clean install :))

I installed a clean slack12 and DL2.18 fixed *stb-admin* error however, gives this error when try to automount cdrom or usb stick:

A security policy in place prevent this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member "Mount" error name "(unset" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal")

*fixed:

adding the user (mine is root) to plugdev:: in /etc/groups fixes the problem.

There are 394MB of package downloads. You can download to/install them from any directory, then delete them when you are done.

The completed install takes 1.3GB.

This is not necessary because PAM handles this. This is how you "fix" the problem on a system without PAM.

Did you do a full install? Specifically, did you install PAM and the Shadow updates?
