Dropline GNOME 2.26.3 for Slackware 12.2 & Slamd64 12.2

Postby saxa on Fri Apr 03, 2009 3:46 pm

Hello, it took us some time but as the topic says it, here we have it.

Take the installer and begin testing it:

http://saxa.droplinegnome.org/i686/2.26 ... 86-1dl.tgz
http://saxa.droplinegnome.org/i686/2.26 ... dl.tgz.md5

For bug reporting, please help us, instead of doing bug reports here try to be as much as possible descriptive
and report the bug at the sf.net site:

http://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/dropli ... e/report/1

You will need to have an sf.net account to do that. Or please somebody here or in irc to fill it up for you.
This will help us to be more effective on creating the final version of our favorite desktop.

Many thanks for supporting us and for using dropline GNOME desktop.

The dropline GNOME development team.

Thanks for the report, but I can say that we do not encourage people to install over -current systems as this have many changes under the hood, so it might work or not, please be understandable to us who develop the thingy. We have a lot of work doing this release in 4-5 people and if you our users begin reporting issues when installing on something different that the platform which we develop for becomes very difficult to track the things.

So please dont get me wrong, but bug reports will be considered valid only if you report from an sane install, which is
for this release as follows:

Slackware 12.2 install with at least the groups installed: A, AP, D, K, L, N, T, TCL, X, XAP
dropline GNOME installed fully with the dropline-installer

Many thanks for using the desktop !

Re: Dropline GNOME 2.26 BETA for Slackware 12.2

Postby Handover Phist on Wed May 13, 2009 9:50 pm

Hey Saxa, thanks for your hard work!

I've installed Dropline on a 12.2 box I uses as my main desktop box. I tend to do quite a bit of custom software work on it so at this point I couldn't even tell you what libraries are what without some extensive mucking around, and I have a baseball thing with my son soon, so I'm keeping this note a bit shorter than I'd like.

Short version: It's busted on my box.

Detailed version: Like I said, I have weird stuff on here, but there's the thing. It seems gconf isn't working properly. Firefox pops up a gconf communication failure, as does just about anything Gnomish. There is no /tmp/gconf-$USER/ directory created either. It's installed and the config files are in place. Confid dirs also appear in the user dir (/home/$USER/.gconf2 and three others) so I think it's running, looking for something (schemas?) and not finding them. I don't know enough about gconf yet to suss out where the snag is, I've done:

rm -rf /tmp; mkdir /tmp; chmod 777 /tmp
rm -rf ~/.gconf*
rm -rf /var/tmp/*
chown -R $USER:users ~/.mozilla # This actually did something, dont know why
gconftool-2 --shutdown

To little avail. It's likely I won't have time to work on it again this week.

I would also like to talk to you folks about maybe donating time and cycles to your cause. I've done some work with Slack: http://websterscafe.com/page.php?20

I just noticed a screwup in one of the descriptions, but baseball waits for no man!

Hi Handover Phist !

Thanks for using our desktop, and thanks for your comments.
I would say for your troubles to verify well what is going on, have you tried the last updates ? I'm pushing out constantly updates, most of our people have no troubles with the desktop, so would be nice that you can fill up bug reports on the
sf.net page.

I'm sorry I'm not much present in here in the forums, but if you want to have more real time talk about the problems, just step into the #dropline channel on irc.freenode.net , ther is many people who can help you for sure.

Also I would like to say that we try to use as much as possible the sf.net trac system as it permits us to go ahead and also back with things easily. Especially for bur reports.

Anyway, I hope that you solved out your problems with the last updats, if not, just contact us and we will see what can we do.

Thanks again.

Ok a little bit of updates, we plan to release soon. I will not promise any dates , but who is following the thing knows that looking at the tickets on sf.net can tell you a lot.

Now the one which a lot of people seem to be asking is if it will work on slamd64 or Bluewhite. I can say the following.
Since I-m writing this from a shiny new beta install on a VM running Slamd64-12.2 I can confirm you 100% that it will
run on Slamd64-12.2 . If you want to help please step in the irc channel and you will receive instructions on how to try or test.
There are still some packages missing but I hope to solve that quickly. It will probably work also on Slackware64 but I wont say it will, since I have not tried it. as for Bluewhite I have no idea as I have never tried to instal that OS.

In any case its comeing closer and closer to the Release Candidat release. And both architectures will be released in the same time. 32bit and 64bit will have 2 separate installers but it will have the same package sets.

Sorry if I`m not much present here in the forums. but I look them from time to time.

Thanks to everyone who is using it, and special thanks to al of you who are contributing and developing it.

Re: Dropline GNOME 2.26 RC 1 for Slackware 12.2 & Slamd64 12.2

Postby saxa on Sat May 30, 2009 12:00 am

As you can see in the topic, we are now aproaching Release Candidate 1 stage. If everything goes ok we will soon be stable and final.

for you who need the 64 bit installer please get it here:

http://saxa.droplinegnome.org/x86_64/2. ... 64-2dl.tgz
http://saxa.droplinegnome.org/x86_64/2. ... dl.tgz.md5

Please note thaat for 64bit I still need to finish some packages and because of that if you want to make a good install you need to deselect the following packages
and opt for a SELECTED install.

Please deselect

OpenOffice.org
mozilla-thunderbird

those 2 are missing for now in the 64bit version only, I hope to have time to finish them soon.

Hi DLG-Forumers!

It's been quite awhile since I've stopped over to this forum. I had some issues in real life... but who care for that huh.. anyway I'm now back to the linux/unix world to bring some updates...

1. Congratulations on the Dropline team for making it to 2.26 RC1! I've kept on reading the mailing-list regarding the updates..
2. I have said good bye to my Desktop PC. It died a 4months ago.. But I have a laptop now to play with. Its a Mac and guess what? I'm happily running Slackware 12.2 Dropline 2.26 RC1 in VMWare-Fusion.

All is well at my end..

OSX + VMWare-Fusion = Slackware 12.2 DroplineGnome 2.26RC1

ps.. i would post some screens if you'd like.. just let me know.

saxa: whats the irc channel again? i might want to drop by.

Hey, its a while since I last time updated you in here. Sorry but I dont use much the forums. Also dont know how much of you out there are following the thing and stay in irc. No problem at all. I really hope we can get few things still fixed up and after that i just plan to move the stuff on sf.net because downloading everything from my dir in droplinegnome.org for some people seems to work very slowly. In any case things are moving ahead on both archs. With the last set of updates I think we have now the gnome 2.26.3 version up. So I would really like that as much of you using it and testing it, since only this way we can get a good product.

Another thing is help, since many people is skilled out there I would like to see this project still going on for a long time, we have the tools and we can make it go ahead with a small effort. So if anybody is interested in helping please join the
mailing list on sf.net or jump into #dropline at irc.freenode.net .

Things are going forward and I would like also to thank all of you who are contributing already to the project !!! Many thanks !!!

I just want to update you that now both archs have a full package set.

So for you installing x86-64 you can do a full install also, since thanks to Renato we have also openOffice.org built for x86-64.

RC2 will be the name of this step.

Good to hear that ! In any case just to advise, that I will continue to update the 2.26 desktop until gnome.org will release updates for it.

It is well stable on my machine and works very well. Hopefully the upcoming 2.28 will solve many of the bugs we have in 2.26.x and will be even better !

Thanks for all of you using the desktop and giving us support.

This version is very stable. Only PulseAudio is really a nightmare!!!!
I had Slackware 12.2 really stable and after installing DL I had terrible problems with sound! (after googling for PulseAudio saw that everybody is having problems, Ubuntu users included). I tried several things to try to solve the problems and then just trashed PulseAudio completely reverting to plain old ALSA and everything is really shinning now!
It would be nice that Dropline included some things like the gstreamer files to play MMS streams and play AAC files and other things I had to install by myself... but I guess I'm used to that being a long long time Slackware user.

Thanks!

Dear Pedro,

Many thanks for the comments ! I'm glad to see that it works well for you. I'm actually also writing you from that same platform. Unfortunately PA is a pain, yes, and its part of gnome so we have to build it. We hope that for the next version we will be able to have better sound with it.
As for the plugins sometimes some of them a proprietary and with different licences so therefore we leave that to the user to install it. But if you have time and the ability, you can propose us your script for building that packages and we include it in our DBS extras so next time your script will be there and you can have it handy to rebuild or install an newer version of it.

Thanks for using our desktop !

Saxa,

Would be nice if 2.26 can move from RC to released.
Only a few tickets are still open to complete that milestone:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/dropli ... dlg-2.26.0

Btw. how is DLG 2.28 going?
I see it is only 6 days before alpha should be completed.

I'm planning to upgrade another system to 12.2 and DLG 2.26. But I have to upgrade the processor of that machine first.
Hopefully I manage to do finish the processor upgrade coming weekend. If there is an iso availalble for DLG 2.26 I can try to use that during the installation.

Hmm, maybe you have not read the main droplinegnome.org web page, but I know we have released it.
And its quite some time ago. I need to see what those 3 bugs are. But in any case it is released and
stable, working well.

As for the 2.28 is as follows, my time is a little bit short and I'm traveling/working a lot of things together.
2.28 build for Slackware-13.0 for i686 is nearly completed and this goes with a big big thank to Tiago (salvador_br).
You can find the packages for now just on my local server, which has not much bandwith to download very quickly.
I hope to be able to transfer those packages soon to dlg.org and prepare an alpha installer.

I know we are very late, and since we have not much people working on the project at the moment, I'm sincerly thinking
if its worth to release a 2.28 release at all, probably we will use it as a testbed for 2.30, and since there
are some nice changes in the slackware current, which will permit us to have much less work, especially libtool v2 and some
other stuff required for gnome, can happen that we will wait up to slackware -13.1 be released and then build again a well done
build on this platform of the latest gnome available. This is my personal opinion, which can not be true since I want also opinions
of the other developers.

Anyway, since we are in need for help, anything anybody can do for the help of the project is very welcomed.

Thats it for now, but please lets use this thread to see problems for 2.26 and eventually create another one for 2.28
or the upcoming 2.30.

As for the project i can say its not dead, and can it be myself alone I will go ahead with it.

Sacha,

I really would like to help but currently between family growth and professional affairs I don't have enough time.
But something I want to say is that at least for me I really don't mind that the 2.28 version is late! I prefer to use a stable system than a quicker one and full of problems! (I still use daily 2.26 with Slack 12.2) so it's better to wait than install something new and have problems.
Slackware itself is historically very conservative about introducing fast new things, praising stability!

Thanks for your (and all the team) work!

Hi Pedro, I completely agree.
Thanks to you for using what we do. Also I can say that we will probably skip the 2.28 release since time
will force us to do directly the 2.30 release on top of slackware 13.0 or 13.1 whatever will be out at the time
of building, and really again try to release it faster. But as you i'm also on 12.2 with dlg 2.26 and hopefully will
have soon some updates on 2.26. I will try to support this as much time as possible.

Thanks again for using it.

If anybody wants to test it, here it is:

http://saxa.droplinegnome.org/i686/test ... -1saxa.tgz
http://saxa.droplinegnome.org/i686/test ... xa.tgz.md5

Its a testing build, it may not work, and it may corrupt your office files.
Use at your own risk....

Please report back if it works. Built on dlg 2.26.3
